As a requirement of the 404 permit
approved by the US Army Corps of
Engineers for the Riverside Parkway
Extension project, an existing eagle
habitat area affected by the
construction of the parkway would
need to be mitigated. The 75 acre
existing bald eagle habitat area is
located between 86th Street and the
96th Street Bridge between the west
right of way fence of the parkway
and the Arkansas River.
The purpose of the eagle habitat
mitigation plan is to provide
vegetative buffering between the
eagle’s perch trees and the
parkway extension. The dense
vegetative buffer not only provides
separation, but also provides good
wildlife habitat. Since a some of
the existing eagle perch trees would
be lost during construction, the
mitigation plan also delineates the
reestablishment of suitable perch
trees.
Unlike landscape plans where
visual aesthetics are a high
priority, this mitigation planting
design provides plants which provide
a valuable wildlife function for the
bald eagle. Approximately 850 plants
are utilized for mitigation
including the following species:
Mulberry, Eastern Cottonwood,
Eastern Red Cedar, Eastern Redbud,
Sycamore, Red-Osier Dogwood, Shumard
Oak, Hackberry, Black Walnut,
American Plum, Red Chokeberry,
Deciduous Holly and Fragrant Sumac.
