Funded by the George Kaiser Family
Foundation and the City of Tulsa
with a budget of $15,000,000, the
River Parks Trail project consists
of the East and West Banks from 11th
Street to 71st Street. The Turkey
Mountain trail near 71st is under
construction and the East Bank Trail
from 21st to 41st has just been
started.
On both sides of the river, where
conditions allow, a dual trail will
provide separation between cyclists
and pedestrians/runners. In
areas where trail separation is not
feasible, care will be taken to
maintain a maximum width of 18-20'
to provide a dual trail
accommodating a 10' marked bicycle
lane and an 8-10' pedestrian/running
lane. The asphalt bicycle
trail will be 10' wide with a dashed
center line stripe and a wider
pedestrian trail will also have a
total width of 10' and in many areas
will provide two surfaces, limestone
chat and asphalt, to appeal to a
variety of runners and walkers.
All bridges will be widened to
20' whenever possible with clearly
marked bike/pedestrian lanes to
allow for safe and efficient trail
use. New lighting will provide
improved dusk/nighttime/predawn
illumination of the trails for
maximum safety and security of all
trail users. Trees will be
added in many areas for beauty and
shade. Selected areas will also be
landscaped with ornamental plants.
The existing vegetation along the
river will be enhanced by removing
invasive plants and pruning some of
the trees, expanding the trail
users' view of the river and
improving the condition of the
existing native vegetation.
All types of information will be
provided to trail users using a new
system of signage. Signs consistent
in appearance and located at regular
intervals along the trail will give
location, direction,
mileage/kilometers and other park
information such as the Arkansas
River's habitat values and unusual
species that can be spotted along
the trail route. Attractive
new site furnishings such as
benches, drinking fountains and
litter receptacles will be provided
to improve the trail users'
experience, and safety barriers will
be constructed in locations where
the enhanced trail is in close
proximity to traffic on Riverside
Drive.
