Johnson Park is a community park
located in south Tulsa along
Riverside Drive. The City of Tulsa
Park and Recreation Department had
identified a spray pool as a needed
facility to complete the children’s
recreation area within this park.
The typical design for spray pools
within Tulsa was over a decade old
and dated. The Tulsa Parks
Department wanted a new prototypical
design which provided more play
value.
The new prototypical spray pool
design utilizes various sized
nozzles which provide jet streams of
water in unique configurations.
Three water areas within the pool
provide a variety of play
experiences. The tunnel water arch
is designed with 20 jets streaming
from the trench grate at an angle,
creating the arches. An offset line
of 16 jets stream vertical through
the concrete with another area
having five vertical jets. Each of
the jet nozzles can be removed and
maintained by staff with ease, while
providing a vandal resistant design.
Each custom drilled spray nozzle
costs less than 50 cents to
manufacture.
Each of the jet spray areas is
operated by an automatic irrigation
controller and can be set to operate
independently, with two, or with all
three areas operating
simultaneously. The controller can
be adjusted to alternate between
several defined programs which might
have all three areas on for five
minutes, two areas on for 10
minutes, all three on for 20
minutes, one on for two minutes an
so on. It is possible to define over
100 different programs to keep the
pool animated for the children’s
enjoyment.
