The Heatherridge created wetland site is located east of an existing residential subdivision fully developed with moderate to large homes. The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority and the City of Tulsa have agreed that the Heatherridge site will serve the dual purpose of wetland mitigation and stormwater detention.

The wetlands are 15 acres of excavated emergent marsh, vegetated with nurserygrown wetland plants such as: soft rush, switchgrass, rice cutgrass, tall fescue, prairie cordgrass, common three-square, smartweed, pickerel weed, lizard's tail, arrowhead, arrow arum, and soft stem bulrush. Plants are planted in two zones: Shallow (+1 foot above normal water level [NWL] to -.5 foot below NWL) and mid to deep (-.5 foot below NWL to -3 feet below NWL). In addition to the plants, approximately 600 bottomland hardwood trees are planted around the perimeter of the wetland to provide buffering and additional wildlife habitat.
