Phase I of the Durant Downtown
Streetscape Project consists of
three and one-half blocks on Main
Street. The streetscape design from
First to Fourth Avenue includes curb
extensions at each of the major
intersections. New handicap ramps
allow continued access throughout
the project area, providing
increased pedestrian safety and
improved visual aesthetics. The curb
extensions are constructed to
contain brick pavers and shrub
planters, which will be irrigated
with an automatic sprinkler system.
Bronze inlays of the city seal are
incorporated into the brick pavers
at the intersection of sidewalks. A
band of brick pavers behind the
concrete curbs continue along the
sidewalks, unifying the project and
providing continuity throughout.
Litter receptacles, ash urns, and
benches are included in this area
also.
These elements are provided
throughout the project limits to
create a special identity that is
unique to Durant, while ensuring
safety requirements are met.
ADA-accessible bumpouts decrease the
crossing distance for the
pedestrian, providing more space on
the sidewalk for pedestrian
amenities, while further delineating
the drive lanes and parking areas
for motorists.
New concrete sidewalks have been
designed with less than a 2% cross
slope for ADA accessibility.
Intersections are equipped with
thermoplastic strips within the
crosswalk to provide more visibility
for the motorist and pedestrian.
Trees that have a proven record in
urban setting have been planted
along the back of curb to provide a
respite in a predominately hard,
urban landscape. New conduit for
irrigation has been installed behind
the curb to enhance plant
survivability and growth rates.
Benches and trash receptacles are
located throughout the project
limits and are of complementary
colors and design. This creates a
unified and classic appearance that
contributes to an intimate
pedestrian appearance.
