Eligible to be listed on the National Register of Historic Districts, the City of Cordell retains a charming, friendly atmosphere that dates back to the turn of the century. The Washita County Courthouse sits prominently in the center of Cordell's historic downtown square. The square is located about a mile and a half from the original “Old Cordell”, and was platted in 1897 when the town was moved to it’s present location or “New Cordell”. The courthouse was placed in the middle of the townsite, surrounded by business lots, to create the town square. The city’s preeminent landmark, it’s dome and clocks are visible from all of the streets on the square and from most of the secondary streets. An effort to restore and retain the overall character of the area around this important landmark was a primary element of the project requirements.

The square in Cordell needed many structural and aesthetic improvements to enhance the historic character of the area and improve its function. Main Street is comprised entirely of vintage brick structures, many of which were built before statehood in 1907. The project included the entire Main Street downtown square and extended one block east and west along Main Street, as well as one block north and south on both College and Market Avenues. Improvements such as new sidewalks, curbs, attractive lighting, street furniture, and landscaping were included to provide an inviting atmosphere to both residents and visitors of the City of Cordell.
