The historic Bentonville Courthouse Square, located in the central business district of Bentonville, is the result of a relocated courthouse moved immediately east in the early 1900's. Central to the octagonal shaped site is a confederate statue erected by the Daughter's of the American Revolution in the late 1930's. The primary goals of the revitalization of the Square were to maintain the historical outline of the site, preserve the historic nature and integrity of the Square, while re-creating a plaza that would bring more people and activity to the site during daytime and nighttime hours.

The client wanted to open up the Square to accommodate events and activities. LandPlan was able to increase pedestrian walkway widths while using areas of lawn to break up the hardscape and provide additional space for spectators during special events.

Around the base of the Confederate statue, a shallow pool with an ornamental fountain was constructed with water jets that arc toward the statue in a circular fashion. The water in the fountain glows with lights at night, improving the visibility and impact the statue creates as the Square's focal point. Keeping the Square lit during the evening hours was an important requirement by the client in order to attract evening activity. Inconspicuous fixtures in the trees provide a dramatic spot-lighting and a romantic moon-lighting effect within the Square, while uplights highlight the statue.
